Verifying youridentity

Why we need to verify your identity

Under regulation for the prevention of financial crime and money laundering, we have a responsibility to verify the identity of every applicant when processing a savings account.

How we verify your identity

Before you open an account with us we need to verify your identity. Depending on the type of account and how you decide to open it, we’ll either do this electronically or ask for documents to prove your identity. If you’re an existing customer, we’ll also let you know if you need to provide us with additional information.

What documents do we accept

Our identification requirements leaflet has a list of the types of documents we will accept for proof of identification and proof of address. After we have taken a record of the information we need, we’ll return your documents safely to you.

How many documents do we need to see

If you apply for an online account

We’ll use an electronic verification system, and if this is successful, that's all we need to do. However in certain cases (for example if you are not listed on the electoral roll or you have recently moved house) we may need additional proof of identity. Please note, we may not be able to open an account for you unless suitable proof of name and address is provided.

If you apply for an account by post

You'll need to send us:

  • A completed cheque drawn on your personal current account (sole or joint) for the opening deposit or as part of the opening deposit.
  • One document to confirm your name
  • One document to confirm your address
  • One additional document confirming your name OR address

If you apply for an account in branch

You'll need to bring:

  • One document to confirm your name
  • One document to confirm your address

Please note
We'll need to see these documents for each person opening an account and they must be originals. The same document cannot be used to confirm both your name and address. Please ensure that your full name, including initials, is on all documents presented.

If you apply for a children's account in a child's name

  • For branch applications, please bring one document from each list to verify the child's identity.
  • For postal applications, please bring one document from each list plus one additional document from either list to verify the child’s identity.

We accept the following proof of name documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Adoption Certificate
  • Passport showing child’s photograph

We accept the following proof of address documents:

  • Most recent Child Benefit Book/Notification Letter

If you apply for a children’s account with a Trustee

You'll need to provide:

  • Proof of the Trustee’s identity (see the branch or postal lists above)
  • One document to confirm the child’s name (see the accepted proof of name documents above)
  • One document to confirm the child’s address if they don’t live with the Trustee (see the accepted proof of address documents above)
