You may think that you can depend on Government benefits to help out. Unfortunately, this is often not the case.

Benefits are scaled down if you have savings above £3,000. Remember any redundancy payment will be included.
Is your mortgage more than £100,000?
YES
Assistance is limited to interest payments on the first £100,000.
Did you take out your mortgage or remortgage before 02.10.1995?
YES
No government assistance for the first two months then only 50% for the next four months.
Did you take out your mortgage or remortgage after 01.10.1995?
YES
No government assistance for the first nine months after this, any benefits will only cover the interest.

Even if you do qualify, any benefit payable will only be based on the interest payments on your mortgage, not endowment payments or capital repayments.
